![]() ![]() ![]() Since then, Army officials have assessed ACFT standards, making tweaks and changes as needed, to ensure the fitness test precisely targets readiness and combat-related skills for a new era of Soldiers. The latest adjustments come on the heels of the Army's initial message that the age- and gender-neutral ACFT will replace the nearly 40-year-old Army Physical Fitness Test, or APFT. The ACFT is expected to be the standard fitness test for all Soldiers by October 2020. Also, all Initial Military Training (Officers and Enlisted) will take the ACFT as a graduation requirement, and the arm-extension pushup will replace the hand-release pushup. The changes, locked in for fiscal year 2020, include the official testing standards for all Soldiers, each one tailored to an individual's military occupational specialty. 27, with changes that will affect every Soldier. The Holistic Health and Fitness system is an investment in every Soldier’s personal readiness and is a commitment to our people by protecting their health and ensuring their readiness to fight and win our Nation’s wars.Major changes are coming to the Army Combat Fitness Test, officials announced Sept. The first part of the study data collection was conducted at Fort Bragg, N.C., in October 2021, and additional sites will be selected as needed to ensure the study is inclusive of a diverse population. Additional information will provide relationships between type and duty time loss due to injury or pregnancy and associations to body composition and physical performance. The study will examine the associations of these four measurements with physical performance and compare them to the current AR 600-9 circumference measurements. The study will use four measurement techniques to assess body composition: (1) standard AR 600-9 tape test, (2) dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), (3) three-dimensional total body scanning (3D scanning), and (4) bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA). For women, the study will also look at the number and dates of pregnancies, as well as delivery methods, and first post-partum physical fitness score and ABCP record, if applicable. The scientifically and ethically approved study will examine active duty, National Guard, and Army Reserve Soldiers representing diverse backgrounds, including age, gender, race/ethnicity, and physical demand categories and duties.ĭuring the study, researchers will assess body size and composition by measuring Soldiers’ height, weight, circumferences, and body composition and examine them in relationship to their most recent physical fitness score (either the ACFT or APFT) as well as the dates and types of physical limitations due to injury. A re-examination of the force is needed as the Army's physical readiness programs evolve to reduce injuries and empower Soldiers’ to perform basic Soldier tasks. It has been more than 30 years since the Army first started using body fat standards in place of height and weight tables. The study is part of the Army’s efforts to optimize Holistic Health and Fitness and improve Soldier readiness. The results of the study will help inform potential future changes to the Army Body Composition Program. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) as the scientific lead, is conducting the comprehensive study to examine the association between body composition and Soldier physical performance. ![]() Army Center for Initial Military Training (USACIMT), with the U.S. Army’s Body Composition Study will take place at Fort Lee, Va. During Happy Hour, guests can take advantage of $5.00 martinis and select appetizers, and even catch some live music on Fridays and Saturdays. Silo’s flagship Alamo Heights location also offers a fantastic Happy Hour at their downstairs bar, and it is even available on Saturdays. Recently, Silo Prime Steakhouse opened inside the historic Fairmount Hotel, and became an instant downtown hot spot. Silo Terrace Oyster Bar, located in the Dominion Ridge Shopping Center, off I-10, features “the freshest oysters from East Coast boutique harvesters,” along with some of the best seafood in town. Silo 1604, near Blanco, was the second location to open and continues to be packed every night. Since the Alamo Heights location of Silo first opened nearly 20 years ago, the owner, Patrick Richardson, has expanded his culinary reach into San Antonio with other locations around town. It was definitely a dish worth returning for and would be a great choice in the cold winter months, as well the sweltering heat of summer here in San Antonio. ![]() The trout was delicate and plentiful, and the spinach had a hint of garlic without being overpowering. Likewise, if the VE puts you in the middle of a hurricane, you wouldn’t expect to feel a gentle breeze or detect the scent of roses. ![]() If the VE shows a perfectly still scene, you wouldn’t expect to feel gale-force winds. Sensory stimulation must be consistent if a user is to feel immersed within a VE. If the environment incorporates 3-D sound, the user must be convinced that the sound’s orientation shifts in a natural way as he maneuvers through the environment. Other sensory output from the VE system should adjust in real time as a user explores the environment. Systems that give a user force feedback and touch interaction are called haptic systems. Most virtual environment experiences prioritize visual and audio components over other sensory-stimulating factors, but a growing number of scientists and engineers are looking into ways to incorporate a users’ sense of touch. Steuer defines breadth of information as the “number of sensory dimensions simultaneously presented.” A virtual environment experience has a wide breadth of information if it stimulates all your senses. For the user, this could refer to a display’s resolution, the complexity of the environment’s graphics, the sophistication of the system’s audio output, et cetera. Depth of information refers to the amount and quality of data in the signals a user receives when interacting in a virtual environment. ![]() Jonathan Steuer proposed two main components of immersion: depth of information and breadth of information. Computer scientist Jonathan Steuer defined it as “the extent to which one feels present in the mediated environment, rather than in the immediate physical environment.” In other words, an effective VR experience causes you to become unaware of your real surroundings and focus on your existence inside the virtual environment. The combination of a sense of immersion and interactivity is called telepresence. He is also able to interact with his environment in meaningful ways. ![]() In a virtual reality environment, a user experiences immersion, or the feeling of being inside and a part of that world. ![]() ![]() ![]() vermiculite: how do you know which one to use in the garden? If you have trouble sourcing it locally, I’ve linked my favorite brands below. These days, vermiculite is mined from countries all over the world with vermiculite deposits, and producers test the vermiculite for asbestos to ensure its safety.īut the fear seems to linger, which may explain why vermiculite is not as easily found in garden centers or nurseries. After it was discovered, the mine shut down. The vermiculite from the Libby mine contained a naturally occurring asbestos called tremolite-actinolite. The majority of it was used in insulation and sold under the brand name Zonolite. (Though it’s recommended to wear a dust mask when handling large amounts of vermiculite, due to the fine particles.)Īt one time, however, vermiculite did have asbestos, and it may still exist in places like the attic insulation of older homes.įrom 1919 to 1990, about 70 percent of all commercial vermiculite in the United States came from a mine in Libby, Montana. ![]() If you’re buying horticultural vermiculite sold in stores today, then that vermiculite does not contain asbestos and is not dangerous for your garden. ![]() It’s the same material used in gas fireplaces with ceramic logs to help the flame spread across the burner more evenly.įor horticultural use, vermiculite is found in the following four different grades, or granule sizes: Type of Vermiculite Vermiculite is used for special coatings and packaging, fire protection, loose-fill insulation, concrete screeds and plasters, swimming pool liners, and potting mixes or potting soils. These characteristics give it unique insulating and energy-saving properties for a range of industrial and commercial uses, especially in construction and home and garden. It’s also non-toxic and safe to use in a variety of applications. These chunky granules are further processed into the coarse, medium, and fine grades of vermiculite that we see and know in gardening.Įxpanded vermiculite is a lightweight, sterile, and inert material that is non-combustible and non-reactive to all but the strongest acids. Scientifically speaking, it’s the name for a group of hydrated magnesium iron aluminum silicate minerals (phyllosilicates) that look like shiny, silvery gold to grayish brown flakes.ĭuring the heating process (called exfoliation), the crude flaky mineral is expanded to many times its volume into a rough, hexagonal-shaped granule resembling a pebble. Like perlite, vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral that expands when heated. ![]() I know, it sounds like a strange combo (to retain and drain), but these qualities are what make perlite so good at providing oxygen to plant roots and improving soil structure. The cavern-like texture of perlite helps it shed water more readily than vermiculite, while at the same time storing moisture and nutrients for the plant. (Despite similarities in appearance, Styrofoam should never be used in gardens or as a substitute for perlite.) Nicknamed “volcanic popcorn,” perlite is made by heating volcanic glass to super high temperatures until it expands and “pops” into the white, porous, lightweight rock that resembles little Styrofoam balls. Here’s what you need to know so you don’t make this mistake. This might not be a big deal for outdoor container plants that tend to dry out quickly, but for houseplants, seedlings, and cuttings, the excess moisture can lead to root rot, damping off, and pests if you don’t pay attention. Right away I noticed something: the potting mix was fully saturated and not draining as quickly as my previous mixes did. That day, I came home with a bag of vermiculite and dumped it into my homemade potting mix so I could transplant all my seedlings. Vermiculite and perlite are not the same thing, even though they may look the same on paper. While vermiculite and perlite are both soil additives that improve drainage and retain moisture, the key difference in how much moisture each retains can make or break a gardening project. Ideal for seed starting or blending into potting mixesīut in another regard, the employee was off base. ![]() ![]() All effort will be made to make the text work in the design you choose.
